Best Shoes for Group Fitness Classes
I have been asked by many participants what the best shoes are for class. The short answer is: "CROSS TRAINERS". However, for most people that doesn't really narrow down the selection so here is a little deeper explanation and recommendations.
Depending on the type of exercise and type of class you take will determine the type of shoe that is best for you. Of course many of us take all sorts of different classes and are not going to wear different shoes for each class. If you do quite a bit of running then I would recommend you get a running shoe that is comfortable for you and suits your running style. You can also use that shoe for other workouts such as muscle sculpting classes (Chisel) as well as other group fitness classes. If you do not run at all then DEFINITELY purchase a cross trainer. Generally speaking I see 2 types of cross trainers out there now (these are MY definitions):
1) LIGHT, FLEX, MINIMALIST: this is the new high tech looking, ultra light cross trainer that is meant to mimic working out barefoot with just a little support. This can be fine if you are ok without having much support and are just using this for a muscle sculpting class, elliptical training, and can also be suitable for WERQ classes if you like the flexibility. These are what a lot of companies are heading towards with their modern styled shoes. Often have "Flex" in the name and have a very thin and flexible sole. These are NOT ideal for Step classes.
2) WIDE & STABLE: the other is the more traditional aerobics cross trainer which provides additional support for lateral movement to prevent twisted ankles. These are usually a STIFFER shoe with a wider more stable base.
** A Few more that I just found by Reebok is their new Trainette series.
Other great cross trainer for gym fitness classes
including Chisel, WERQ and Step:
Asics Gel-260 TR -
RYKA Exertion -
Saucony Grid Virtue (or V2) - The slip-free outsole on this shoe is ideal for side-to-side and front-to-back movements. It delivers extra cushioning for jumps and lunges, too.
Reebok Fusion TR - Whatever your sport of choice, help your feet use more natural movement in the RealFlex Fusion TR trainers from Reebok.

Step Aerobic Shoes
The ideal shoes for step aerobics provide more shock absorption than other sneakers and also provide increased stability to the foot, which is necessary for side to side motions, with flexibility for movements such as turning. Getting the proper shoes for step will help to prevent injuries such as shin splints, knee pain, stress fractures and plantar fascia.
Ryka Intensity XT3
The Ryka Intensity XT3 is a lightweight shoe designed for cross training. This shoe features extra shock absorption. A removable sock liner provides increased cushion. Added support at the midfoot supports the arch. You can also try Ryka Transition or Ryka Rhythm II in the same regards.
Reebok Tempo Flex
Designed specifically for women, the rubber pods forefoot flex of the unique outsole provide advanced performance during pivot- and lateral-inclined activities. It features breathability and an antimicrobial sock liner. The removable sock liner provides comfort and accommodates orthotics. The outsole offers flexibility for pivoting and stepping. Increased cushioning throughout the shoe make these a super choice for step. (I think this is an older model, so might be tougher to find)
New Balance WX871
New Balance's WX871 sneaker was created specifically for step aerobics and fitness boot camps. These lightweight and offer New Balance's most advanced shock absorption technology with extra cushioning in the heel. Midfoot support protects the foot during side to side movements. Designed for indoor or outdoor use.
Reebok Vibe Train - Stay focused on your workout in the performance technology of the Reebok VibeTrain Low athletic shoes. DMX Shear technology reduces the stress of heel impact (I recently purchased these from shoes.com for $60) http://www.shoes.com/en-US/Product/EC1288299-5164929/Reebok/Grey_Blue_White/Womens+VibeTrain+Low.aspx)

Other good cross trainers for those with knee problems:
ASICS GEL-Fluent TR 2 - A lot of knee pain in women is caused or aggravated by the constant shock of intense movements. Wearing the ASICS GEL-Fluent TR 2 means that each step is cushioned with a scientifically formulated gel that absorbs much of this shock, helping relieve knee pain.
Nike Women's Free Trainer 7.0.IV - The Nike Women's Free Trainer 7.0.IV is primarily designed for women who routinely do cross training that is lower impact or involves lots of lateral movements. It is an extremely lightweight shoe that provides enough support for problematic knees without slowing you down.
If you can not find these particular shoes to purchase at least take a look at them just to SEE the difference of a more stable cross trainer that you can look for to get that added support.
